Norman G.W. Meyn
CW4 Norman G. W. Meyn, USA, (Ret.), peacefully passed away in his home early Monday, December 5, 2016 after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kathleen Meyn; children, Kim Hamilton and husband, Steven, Steven K. Meyn and wife, Diana, both of Albuquerque, Theresa James of Rio Rancho, Melanie Brady and husband, Patrick of Ontario, Canada, Samuel James III and wife, Deborah of Deer Park, TX and Michael J. James of Farmington Hills, MI; grandchildren, David J.Hamilton, Matthew M. Hamilton, Christopher Meyn, Ashlee Garrett, William Besse, Leah Murray, and Gennie Morris, Jay Murphy, Jr., Mariah Murphy, Connor James, Johnny and James Lelei, Robert and Larry Bicknese, Elizabeth, Mary and Samantha Brady, Hunter James, Sophia Marianito and Dalton Anderpont; great-grandchildren, Bryce, Ethan, Danielle, Avery, Owen, Amanda, Krista, Ivan, Xavier, Carmella, Amaya, Kaden, Kael, and Kaylianna; and other relatives and friends.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Freda (Joost) and (Johann) Emil Meyn, both of Steinau, Germany.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY of German parents, but was raised in Germany from the age of 5 after his parents returned there to live. Later, at the age of 18, as an American citizen, he returned to the US to make his home. Norman was immediately drafted into the Army and sent to Korea during the period of the Korea war where he served for two years. After his honorable discharge from active duty, Norman joined the Army Reserve. His military career spanned nearly 40 years, and among his many medals and awards was the recipient of the Legion of Merit. Norman was a volunteer at Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center and accrued more than 8700 hours of volunteer service, both as a driver and later as an escort. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association and a lifetime member of the Reserve Officer's Association. Chief Meyn was also a valued employee of Mack Trucks and later the AMSA (Army Military Support Activity) while affiliated with the Army Reserve. He loved woodworking, spending many hours in his shop. Norman was very easy going, quiet, strong, resourceful, and smart but also had a very dry humor. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Friends may visit Sunday, December 11, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at FRENCH – Lomas. A Celebration of His Life will take place Monday, December 12, 2016, 10:00 a.m. at FRENCH - Lomas with Rev. Steven Hamilton officiating. A Reception will follow at the FRENCH - Lomas Reception Center. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Steven Meyn, David Hamilton, Matthew Hamilton, Christopher Meyn, Sam James and Michael James. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Norman's name to the National Diabetes Association, diabetes.org or the charity of their choice.
