Obituary for
Rex Dean Myers
Rex Dean Myers died on January 14, 2017. He is preceded in death by his wife, Winnie; and his four siblings, Kathryn, Glenn, Charles, and Lloyd. He was born in October 1930, in Corning, KS. He was the son of Edward and Maude Myers, and the youngest child in his family. His family moved to Topeka, KS, when his father died; he was 10 years old. His mother became a seamstress to support the family. Rex attended Topeka High School; he worked at Offens Hardware Store in Topeka during high school to help his mom make ends meet. He kept in touch with his friends from high school and enjoyed attending reunions over the years. Rex served three years in the Army during the Korean conflict.
After his discharge from the Army, Rex moved to Kansas City, MO, and studied electronics at Central Tech Institute. He met his wife, Winnie while taking dance lessons at the Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Kansas City. They were married in March 1957, and lived in Cincinnati, OH. They moved to Albuquerque in April 1957 when Rex got a job at Sandia National Laboratories. They were very happy living in Albuquerque. They adopted two children, Steven and Ramona, and raised them from infancy.
Rex worked at Sandia for 35 years. He and Winnie enjoyed traveling to Kauai when he was working in Sandia’s small-rocket group. They made many friends on Kauai. Rex retired from Sandia in 1992. He and Winnie enjoyed traveling with the Roadrunner R.V. Club after Rex retired.
Rex and Winnie were members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and were active in the church for many years. Rex, Winnie, and Ramona purchased the food and coordinated the volunteers from AARP and St. Paul’s to feed the homeless and the working poor people at Project Share, Inc., once per month for 15 years. In addition, Rex ushered at St. Paul’s for 17 years.
Rex’s hobbies included fixing radios and televisions, working on his computer, walking his dogs, biking, and camping. He enjoyed being in the outdoors very much and was an avid sports fan. Rex, Winnie, and Ramona were season-ticket holders for the Lady Lobos Basketball games for many years. He enjoyed ushering at the UNM football and basketball games. He loved watching football games with the family.
Rex is survived by his son, Steven; daughter, Ramona; nephews, Ron, Gregg, and Larry Myers; nieces, Karen Dodson and Sharon Holgerson; and close family friends, Johanna Dawson, Helen Saylor and her son, Douglas, Lorraine Jordan, Ben Feerer, Patsy Ortiz, Ernest Carrejo, John, and Jeanette Lederer; and the best neighbors ever, David Reinhardt, Carolyn Kirby, and Debbie Bachmann. Rex was a loving person who rarely complained and he will be missed deeply by his family and friends.
The family wishes to thank Rex’s caregivers from Home Care Assistance who surrounded him with love and excellent care, with special thanks to Debbie Arrington. And thanks to the staff at the VA Hospital who helped him in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Rex be remembered through acts of kindness, donations, and service to those in need.
The family plans to have a service to honor Rex later in the year (late spring/early summer).
